Synapse Films announces today the start of a high-definition transfer and extensive digital restoration on the classic 1975 16mm cult-horror film THUNDERCRACK!, directed by the late Curt McDowell. The film will be unleashed to coincide with the film’s 35th Anniversary in 2010.
“THUNDERCRACK! is a great film, and we are working with the director’s sister, and THUNDERCRACK! Actress, Melinda McDowell to make sure the film is presented correctly, in exactly the way Curt would’ve wanted it released,” says Donald May, Jr., President of Synapse Films. “Synapse will be releasing the film in it’s restored, longer form, using the one and only original 16mm film print of the longer version that still exists on the planet. And, we’re loading it with extras, of course!”
This black and white underground cult horror film about a group of people who meet a mysterious woman at her foreboding home on one dark and stormy night, is a highly controversial mix of horror, explicit sex and amazing stylized photography. To some, it defies description. To many, it’s the greatest midnight movie ever made. What’s it about, exactly? Fox News could only describe it as “a horror porn film.” That’s not quite right, of course, but to give too much away would spoil the many surprises that await the viewer. “If you’ve never seen it, you’ve missed out on one of the strangest, most entertaining films ever made,” says Synapse Films CEO, Jerry Chandler. “THUNDERCRACK! is a film we’ve pursued for years and we’re excited to be given the opportunity to release it in it’s proper form.”
Actress Melinda McDowell couldn’t be happier with her choice of Synapse Films to bring this film to home video. “When I went looking for a home video distributor for THUNDERCRACK!, everyone told me Synapse Films should do the project. I’d sampled some of their previous work and was stunned at the video quality of their releases. Based on their transfers, and willingness to work closely with the filmmakers, I knew they were the best choice,” she explains. “Don came out to San Francisco for a visit and spent a week with me going through Curt’s archives. We found some amazing material! We found some real treasures that only Curt and the crew had seen 35 years ago. Our longer version of the film will require extensive restoration, but Synapse Films is up to the task. We’ll be honoring Curt with the ultimate, most beautiful presentation possible.”

I am so sorry I didn't see your question earlier! Yes, I'll tell you what I can at this time. An official announcement will be made on the 'Thundercrack!' website and the site of the DVD company simultaneously in the next few weeks. Earlier this month we spent several days going through all of the 'Thundercrack!' related things that I have here, including many, many reels of film. We found so many treasures in there, outtakes, deleted scenes, etc.-- all kinds of things that we think you'll really like seeing. Remember, all of that is actual film, so it has been taken to a facility for restoration and to be transferred to digital (hi-def!) format. The company is going above and beyond in their time and money put into this project, and it looks as if 'Thundercrack!' will be presented to you with a beauty and clarity of sound and picture that even the original did not have. Believe me, you will know when it is ready to be released, we'll be very thorough in our announcing to everyone! I'm personally very excited to see the restored version. There are so many people who have only seen the shortened, bootleg, poor quality version. When they see the real thing, this beautifully restored, full length director's cut, they'll be delightfully shocked. When we have made all the selections regarding which extras will be included, that is when you will see the announcement (and learn which company it is). Soon, I hope!
If anyone reading this is in the San Francisco area, 'Thundercrack!' will be playing on the big screen (!) on June 23 at the Victoria Theater, as part of the LGBT Festival. I'll be there, and hope some of you will be, too.
As always, feel free to ask me anything 'Thundercrack!' related, as long as it isn't the exact release date, I don't know that yet!

And here I am!
Yes, it is true - and can no longer be kept a secret! You are absolutely right, there is no one else more qualified than Don May, Jr. to prepare this film for DVD presentation. As I mentioned in another post, we had a screening of 'Thundercrack!' in San Francisco on June 23, as part of the big Frameline LGBT Festival. It may have been the most satisfying 'Thundercrack!' event to date, for me. I so wish you all could have been there! The theater was packed, even the balcony, with an extremely enthusiastic and appreciative audience. It was such a fun night, starting with our 'Gert's Eyebrows' contest! People arrived at the theater with 'Thundercrack! inspired eyebrows, in hopes of winning one of the prizes! I was responsible for selecting the best eyebrows and presenting (and providing!) the prizes onstage. One person won a framed original hand-silk-screened 'Thundercrack!' poster from 1976. There were only fifty of those that were created, signed and numbered by 'Mookie Blodgett' (Phil Heffernan), the actor who played 'Chandler'. Earlier that day, though, I had spoken on the phone with Don May Jr., and he had given me permission to announce to the audience that night about our upcoming Synapse DVD release. So, I did!
We will still be making an official announcement after it's decided exactly what we'll be offering on the DVD other than the film itself. Don spent a week here with me in March so we could go through all of the 'Thundercrack!' related things that I have. We had great fun watching MANY reels of film, finding deleted scenes, outtakes, behind the scenes footage-- so many treasures! I am confident that Synapse and I definitely both have the same product in mind - the ultimate, deluxe, full length, beautifully restored film with every added feature you could want! And we DID discuss the packaging...
About Rick Trembles' Motion Picture Purgatory: I LOVE the 'Thundercrack!' drawing and review he did! It originally was online, available for viewing until he decided that it would be in the actual book (Volume 1). He and I communicated a few years ago, and I seem to recall he said that he'd be happy to somehow add a few words on or in the DVD packaging. I'd like to buy his Volume 2!
I do hope I've answered your questions about 'Thundercrack!', but if not, please feel free to keep asking! I think the 2010 timing is perfect - enough time to do a great job of it, then presenting it on the 35th Anniversary! I think it will prove to be worth the wait.
All the best to you, too!
