The Hour-Glass Sanatorium (1973. Polen)
An epic, dreamlike stream-of-consciousness film, Wojciech Has’s cinematic adaptation of Bruno Schulz’s story 'Sanatorium under the Sign of the Hourglass', is a cinematic feast, featuring superb performances, atmospheric flair and other-worldly sets.
Set in the pre-World War II era, the film sees Joseph (Jan Nowicki) travelling on astrange, dilapidated train to see his dying father (Tadeusz Kondrat) in a sanatorium. Upon arrival though, he finds a hospital crumbling into ruin, where time is slowed down in order to maintain his father’s life signs. As he is beset by events and figures from his own past, Joseph is visited by the fantasies and moments of his youth, before having to face up to the pedestrian present and the responsibility of middle age. A film that served as a precursor to the works of Terry Gilliam and Tim Burton, and a favourite of the Quay Brothers, Hourglass Sanatorium is a surreal exploration of immortality, memory and psychoanalysis.

Contains nudity.

Yûkoku aka Patriotism (1966. Japan)
Directed, produced and acted by the infamous writer/political idealogue Yukio Mishima, this short, minimalist and stark film offers an unflinching depiction of Mishima's personal and political ideology. Filmed just four years prior to his suicide, the undeniable similarity between this film's narrative and Mishima's own personal demise caused the film to be "destroyed" at his wife's request shortly thereafter. In 2005, following his widow's death, the film was re-released. It is nothing short of fascinating, particularly for those familiar with the political views and death of Mishima.
This is an eery, almost haunting film given its similarity to the reasons and methods whereby Yukio Mishima took his own life on November 25, 1970. Mishima himself said of the film that it was the purest and most complete statement of what he had striven to say through his myriad writings and dialogues.

Engelske undertekster.

Derefter vises Irina Palm - Nattens røde lygter (2008)

THE VALLEY OF THE BEES (1968. Tjekkoslovakiet)
The majestic brutality of the Middle Ages is brought to vivid life in this mesmerizing and surreal period drama. Ordered into the Brotherhood of Teutonic Knights as punishment for mocking his father's second (and very young) wife, Ondrej attempts to follow the knights' spiritual guidance, but eventually breaks with the group and returns home. Discovering his father has died, Ondrej begins a new and blasphemous relationship with his stepmother. By the epic director of "Marketa Lazarová". 97 min.

BLACKMAIL IS MY LIFE (1968. Japan)
Directed by Kinji Fukasaku ("Graveyard Of Honor", "Virus", "Battle Royale", "Black Lizard", "Battles Without Honor and Humanity") this yakuza and ambitious gangster/blackmailer film is most certainly one of the forerunners of many contemporary gangster/lowlife films: Stylish, sexy, villains with dubious ethics, catchy, hip music, ample, dramatically bold blood, a sharp, dynamic visual style complete with sequences in black & white, sepia and color, and abundant attitude while still being a critique of politics and power. Tarantino is really nothing new. 90 min.

Entré 20,- kr / Start: Kl. 19.00 – Begge film har engelske undertekster.

Violence at Noon (1966. Japan) concerns the odd circumstances surrounding a horrific murder and rape spree. In a twist, the film is as much about the two women who protect the violent man—his wife and a former victim—as it is about him. Containing more than two thousand cuts and a wealth of inventive widescreen compositions, this coolly fragmented character study is a mesmerizing investigation of criminality and social decay. From the director of the controversial and erotic arthouse classic In the Realm of the Senses. 99 min.

Lunacy (2006. Tjekkiet) is loosely based on two short stories by Edgar Allan Poe and inspired by the works of the Marquis de Sade. In nineteenth-century France a young man is plagued by nightmares in which he is dragged off to a madhouse. On the journey back from his mother’s funeral he is invited by a Marquis he meets at lunch to spend the night in his castle. There he witnesses a blasphemous orgy and a ‘therapeutic’ funeral. He tries to flee but the Marquis insists on helping him conquer his fears and takes his guest to a surrealistic lunatic asylum where the patients have complete freedom and the staff are locked up behind bars. Described by legendary filmmaker Svankmajer as a 'philosophical horror film', Lunacy combines live action and stop-motion, sex and violence, grand guignol terror and gallows humor, and a lot of animated meat. 118 min.

Daisies aka Sedmikrásky (1966. Tjekkoslovakiet)

A satirical, wild and irreverent story of rebellion, Věra Chytilová's classic of surrealist cinema is perhaps also the most adventurous and anarchic Czech movie of the 1960s. Two young women, both named Marie, revolt against a degenerate, decayed and oppressive society, attacking symbols of wealth and bourgeois culture. Defiant feminist statement? Nihilistic, avant-garde comedy? It remains a cinematic enigma and its influence is still felt today - from the extreme Baise-Moi to the mainstream Thelma & Louise and in the films of (amongst others) Jacques Rivette, Bertrand Blier, Catherine Breillat and Gregg Araki. A riotous, punk-rock poem of a film that is both hilarious and mind-warpingly innovative, Daisies continues to provoke, stimulate and entertain. 73 min.

Fighting Elegy aka Kenka Erejii (1966. Japan)

High schooler Kiroku Nanbu yearns for the prim, Catholic Michiko, but her only desire is to reform Kiroku's sinful tendencies. Hormones raging, Kiroku channels his unsatisfied lust into the only outlet available: savage, crazed violence. Fighting Elegy is a unique masterpiece in the diverse career of Seijun Suzuki, combining the director's signature bravura visual style with a brilliantly focused satire of machismo and fascism. Filmmaker Suzuki is the maverick behind 60s cult classics like Branded To Kill, Gate Of Flesh, Tokyo Drifter. 86 min.
